CARING FOR ACRYLIC SIGNS

Cleaning your Acrylic House Sign

Cleaning:

Use warm water and a mild detergent (washing-up liquid or shampoo are ideal). Immerse the item in the warm water and wipe gently with a clean cloth before rinsing thoroughly. Then carefully dry the item with a lint-free tea-towel/cloth. Do not use paper towels.

If rubbed too harshly any dirt left on the surface may cause scratches.

Polishing

Micro-fibre cloths are perfect for polishing acrylic, and car-interior polish works very well.
Do not use furniture or window polish, and make sure the product is suitable for use on plastic.

Removing surface scratches

For light scratches, use a buffing compound such as car wax, or a good fine-grit product such as Novus 2 and 3, and lightly buff the item until the scratches disappear.
If looked after, Acrylic will continue to look as good as new for many years.
Acrylic can break if dropped, but otherwise is quite resilient, with the added benefit that it won't shatter like glass.

However, it is important to KEEP ALL ACRYLIC ITEMS AWAY FROM HEAT. In extreme cases, Acrylic can go floppy if left too near a heat source.

House Signs in Acrylic

Acrylic signs are one of the most widespread and versatile sign formats is use today. The reason that acrylic signs are so popular is based on three particular aspects. Firstly, acrylic signs are long-lasting. They keep their appearance remarkably well, whether indoor or outdoor. With just a quick wipe with a wet cloth and some detergent every once in a while, acrylic signs can be kept looking as good as new for a long time to come. In some cases, where vinyl lettering may be a temptation for those who may peel or scratch off parts of the sign, acrylic signs can be manufactured in a transparent format, with the lettering printed in on the back of the sign. When the signs are placed on the wall or surface, the lettering is therefore protected.
Acrylic signs also have an advantage over many other sign formats due to their versatility of shape. Acrylic is a flexible medium, and can be moulded in a wide variety of shapes. Boxes, leaflet holders, badges, illuminated signs, doorplates, indoor and outdoor signs can all be produced, and acrylic signs can be made in a huge variety of colours too – both transparent, partially opaque and fully opaque. Partially opaque signs can be illuminated from behind and make exceptionally good signs, particularly in health and safety contexts, such as fire escape routes and emergency exits.
It is also worth noting that  acrylic signs are considerably more economic than many alternatives, such as glass and wood, and compared to poly-carbonates which are used in many cases, acrylic provides a much flatter appearance, and therefore increased clarity.
Although there are a wide variety of technically advanced plastics and resins available today, acrylic has remained a lasting favourite, and it is not hard to see why. Cheaper than metal, more versatile and durable than wood, and more attractive than plastic or vinyl,  acrylic signs have a look that means professionalism and style, and will retain that style and look far longer than many wooden signs, which begin to peel, crack and rot, and metal signs which may rust.
The only real limitation on the use of  acrylic signs is in places where temperatures can be excessive. In these cases, the vinyl is liable to melt. Oven signs and boiler labels are best manufactured from a different material.
A very modern way in which acrylic signs are being used is to have clear signs mounted just a little away from the wall. With effective lighting, this creates a shadow effect, which adds another dimension to the sign, and makes for a very attractive and eye-catching sign or display.
The only drawbacks on some  acrylic signs is that, if cleaned too hard with a rough surface, small scratches may be created, deteriorating the overall look. Acrylic is also subject to glare problems, but most manufacturers able to provide anti-glare acrylic if required. Careful, thought out lighting can be of enormous benefit in these cases, with either rear lighting, diffused or downward lighting preferable to a direct spot light.

House signs

House signs have been used since ancient times to personalise a dwelling, turning a house into a home.[1]

Types

Stone

Having already been around for half a billion years, stone signs are hard to beat for durability. The most commonly used types of rock are marble, granite, and slate. Marble and Granite can look quite elegant, but do not have much scope for artwork beyond simple line drawings. Any sculpture in these signs would be extremely costly. Slate has its own distinctive appearance which is also popular despite being again not suitable for sculpture. If gilding is desired, these signs should be hand carved for maximum effect. Sand-blasting, though less expensive, creates a rounded groove, with inferior reflective quality.

Cast metal

These signs are usually made of aluminium, iron, or brass. The unique cast look can be quite appealing but these signs are not long-lasting. Brass tends to tarnish and corrode after a few years, as does Iron. Also, artwork on these signs is generally restricted to a motif chosen from a gallery. Although poorly suited for custom decoration since individual artwork would require a custom mould, these signs do remain popular due to their traditional appearance.

Ceramic

Ceramic signs give a very traditional feel, though there is little scope for carving or sculpting, hence they can look a little flat. These signs tend to last very well once mounted. Care must be taken not to crack the sign in the mounting process, or by dropping it prior to mounting.

Acrylic - Acrylic Master House Signs

Plates, similar to those made of stainless steel or brass, can be used where a more modern look is desired. Plates, similar to those made of stainless steel or brass, can be used where a more modern look is desired. Acrylic signs are best suited for indoor or business applications, but can also be used for house signs. Light and inexpensive, but will not generally last more than a few years when exposed to the elements. Again restricted to simple designs with less opportunity for sculpture.
Until 2011
High quality contemporary acrylic signs suitable for internal or external use. Acrylic master produced signs that look crystal clean like glass and are ideal for a modern look. Apart from an occasional clean no other maintenance is required. They can be used for house signs, business name plates or information signage.

Carved

Traditionally made of wood, these signs allow for the most creativity in terms of painting and sculpture. Western red cedar is most common,[citation needed] although cherry and oak are also used along with a range of darker tropical woods. Wood requires regular maintenance and repeated coats of varnish or paint. More recently developed synthetic materials, notably high-density urethane (HDU), have been extremely successful, allowing the same quality and craftsmanship coupled with a much greater weather resistance.[2]

Have some fun :)

A "sign generator" is an online widget that allows you to change the letters in various photos of signs (road signs, people holding signs, product parodies) to make personalized images/graphics and ecards. Simply choose an image template.

All templates have been pre-laid out so that the new text you embed will be in the proper area (well close enough for all intense and purposes, you can adjust the paragraph right/left/up/down, change fonts/color, even semitransparent text), this make your image creating easier and less time consuming.

You can also use your own images with a similar tool on www.SignGeneratorMaker.com.

PMMA Acrylic properties

Sheets of PMMA are commonly used in the sign industry to make flat cut out letters in thicknesses typically varying from 3 to 25 millimeters (0.1 to 1.0 in).
These letters may be used alone to represent a company's name and/or logo, or they may be a component of channel letters which are neon or LED illuminated. Acrylic's attractiveness, durability and resistance to warping make it an ideal interior and exterior sign material.
Acrylic is also used extensively throughout the sign industry as a component of wall signs where it may be a backplate, painted on the surface or the backside, a faceplate with additional raised lettering or even photographic images printed directly to it, or a spacer to separate sign components.
One of the most popular sheets is a non-glare, translucent which is sold in 1.6 millimeters (0.06 in) or 3 millimeters (0.12 in) in thicknesses.
